Overcoming boundaries, together

Manmade publishes human experiences of a border, each issue centering on an area that still is or has been divided. As borders emerge and disappear, as they are being shifted and deconstructed, the need for public debate remains: Manmade aims to overcome boundaries by establishing a new culture of dialogue and social cohesion. Finding common ground in division is at the forefront of each publication.

Issue #1: Berlin

If this is your home, tell us about it

All walls have been torn? Certainly not. The largest city of the European Union faces forces of globalisation, digitalisation, urbanisation, migration, populism. How do its inhabitants find together – and do they find together?

Whoever you are, we are looking for you

Manmade anticipates the need for integrating different fields of practise in order to effectively challenge the process of border-making and to expand the circle of human concern.

Manmade therefore invites collaboration on journalistic, graphic and photographic work as well as entries from

  1. relating academic research and the arts, including theoretical essays and critical commentaries,
  2. public institutions and grassroot organizations building social cohesion, or profiles of intriguing characters fighting to change norms
  3. citizens outlining personal reflections and experiences.
